Taking a shot at a custom class, part 1

I don’t think an expanded critical threat range and a higher chance to hit are game breakers. Especially if you look at the other striker in 4e that’s mechanically different from the others: the Avenger. Even though the Avenger doesn’t get these same bonuses, in play, rolling twice to hit amounts to the same thing as a higher hit chance and a higher critical chance.
I think what you’ve got here is interesting and cool and the fact that it does something mechanically different is a huge bonus in 4e (I play an Avenger and I’ll tell you the main attraction to the class for me was that it worked differently than the Ranger and the Warlock in my party).
The Avenger was one of the sources of mechanical inspiration for this class’ striker mechanic. After my latest playtest I agree with you wholeheartedly. The net critical bonus for the gunmage is less than the Avenger’s bonus, especially because the prerequisites for oath re-roll are less stringent than arcane sights critical bonus prerequisites.
My hope is that the gunmage continues to be an intriguing class.
I dig your classic creatures, might use a few on my players!
